Ingredients

  • 9 bread slices
  • 200–250 g kalakand or any mawa sweet
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup desiccated coconut
  • Orange food colour
  • Green food colour
  • 1 tsp milk

Instructions

  1. Make the syrup. Heat a pan and add the sugar and 1 cup of water. Keep stirring until the sugar melts completely.
  2. Boil. Once the sugar melts, let it boil on a high flame for about 2 to 3 minutes. The syrup should be thick, but do not take it to a 1 or 2 string syrup. Turn off the flame and let it cool.
  3. Cut the bread. Meanwhile, cut each bread slice into 4 equal squares.
  4. Divide. Once the syrup has cooled, divide it equally into 3 bowls. Divide the desiccated coconut into 3 bowls in the same way.
  5. Colour. Add a pinch of orange colour to the first bowl of syrup and a pinch of green to the second, and leave the third plain. Do the same with the coconut: orange in one, green in another and the third plain. Mix the coloured bowls well.
  6. Orange pieces. Take 2 bread squares, dip them in the orange syrup, take them out and squeeze out the extra syrup. Put about 1 tsp of kalakand between them and press gently so they do not open. Immediately roll in the orange coconut and place on a plate.
  7. Green and white pieces. Repeat with the green and plain syrup, filling each pair with a tsp of kalakand and rolling them in the green and white coconut.
  8. Store. You can refrigerate the mithai and have it for 1 to 2 days.
